Chinese assistance for Sri Lankan fisheries sector


Annual scientific session 2016 of the National Aquatic Resource Research and Development Agency (NARA) was held on Tuesday (29th March) under the patronage of the Ambassador to the People's Republic of China in Sri Lanka Yi Xianliang.


The session, themed “Healthier Aquatic Environment for the Economic Growth” touched a wide range of fields associated with the fisheries sector.

Ambassador Yi Xianliang addressing the occasion assured for further technical assistance and funds from the Chinese government to uplift the fisheries sector in Sri Lanka.

The world sea food consumption remained at 140.3 millions of metric tons in 2007 and is expected as 186 millions of metric tons by 2030.

According to the Dr.Rohana Subhasinghe, the Asian seafood productions have a good demand around the world and, he as a proposal suggested the sustainable management of the this ocean resource.

Chaiman of the Nara Dr.Anil Premarathne, Director General B.C.W.Iddamalgoda, and Dr.Thilak Dharmarathne were also participated.
