Government has decided to declare 26th of October as the Inventors' Day.

Jaffna University to get research and training complex

Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs has taken steps to implement research and training complex at the Faculty of Agriculture in University of Jaffna.
Japanese government has agreed to provide a grant of Rs. 2,100 million for the above purpose.
Programme launched to prevent drug shortages in 2017

Ministry of Health has launched a new programme under the instructions of Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne to prevent drug shortages next year (2017) and to ensure uninterrupted drug supply for all state hospitals.
According to the Ministry, annually around 4000 drugs are obtained by the Medical Supplies Division of the Health Ministry from state and private sector. Some drug shortages were reported during the past months due to lack of understanding about drug supply. Now drugs are being provided for cancer patients free of charge without limitations.
Special trains for New Year from Apr.10
Department of Railway has taken measures to operate special trains during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year period.
The special train service will be in operation from April 10.

A train will leave Colombo Fort at 7.30 p.m. on April 10, 12, 17 and 19 to Bandarawela. while a Colombo bound train will leave for Bandarawela at 6.15 a.m. on April 13,18 and 20.

US: The US administration is considering a plan to greatly increase the number of American special operations forces deployed to Syria as it looks to accelerate recent gains against Islamic State, according to US officials.

Passenger ferries arrived at the Turkish port of Diliki yesterday morning, carrying 136 people who were returned from Greece under a EU deal.

'World Community Service Helping Hands Project', an Australian International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGO) donated a stock of 108 artificial limbs to disabled war veterans on Friday (01st April).

The 18-member delegation visited the Ranaviru Sevana in Ragama  and presented prosthetic limbs to 99 disable War Heroes.


Brussels Airport is to reopen on Sunday (3rd April), 12 days after its departure hall was wrecked by Islamic State suicide bombings, with chief executive Arnaud Feist announcing three flights.

“From Sunday morning, Brussels Airport should be partially operational,” Feist told a press conference Saturday, adding that the resumption of services “plays an important role in our grieving process”.
